New Year Series #2

For the remainder of January and early Feb I am documenting some interesting Aussie artists and bands, asking them what their plans are for 2017, and what they are most looking forward to in the world of new music. This is my New Year Series.

Bearclaw Camp

I recently stumbled upon this Adelaide pop punk band when I heard one of their latest tracks ‘Contentious’, which comes from their 2016 self-titled EP. Even if their genre isn’t your thing, it’s hard not to be taken in by the infectious guitar intro. Before reading further, I encourage you listen to this track. I’ve conveniently embedded it below for your listening pleasure.

Bearclaw Camp is Samm Hunt (bass/vocals), Aaron Fox (drums), Harry Gieck (guitar/vocals) and Luke Collier (guitar/vocals). I spoke with Samm to find out more about what is in store for the band in 2017. “We’re another EP soon so hopefully that will come out well.” In addition to this, Bearclaw Camp supported UK band Moose Blood recently and they are hoping to support more international bands in the near future.

“[A]s for music direction, we’re just working on finding our sound a little more…while also trying out new things.”

Continuing from edition #1 of New Year Series, where I talked with Doron Losky from Lostkeyz, I’ve been asking what New Year’s resolutions artists have, or what they are hoping to improve on in 2017. Samm: “I personally don’t have any New Year’s resolutions. But as for the music direction we’re just working on finding our sound a little more, after the first EP, we were happy with how it came out but there was a few different sounding songs on there.” That’s as good a resolution/music direction plan as any, and this author and new fan (come to Melbourne, please) wishes Bearclaw Camp the best with their 2017 plans. Samm continued: “The next EP fits together a little bit more so we’re working on finding what we want to sound like while also trying out new things.”

I asked what they would be looking forward to in 2017 in terms of new music releases and tours in Australia. Samm told me, “Really looking forward to the Trophy Eyes tour and a new Knuckle Puck album.” With that, I’ll leave you with the track ‘Nose Bleed’ from those Newcastle natives Trophy Eyes. Best of luck for the year ahead, Bearclaw Camp!

Top Ten Tracks of 2016 (#1!)

First I just want to say how big 2016 was for the Unearthed platform. Sooooooooooo0oooo many great artists – Tash Sultana is set to take the whole bloody world by storm this year, Amy Shark will top the Hottest 100 if Instagram hashtags are anything to go by, and Hannahband were doing their bit to help Burn It Down.

I want to give some honourable mentions:

  • Alex the Astronaut, who I found out about way too late in the game (apologies) but who is an amazing artist. ‘Already Home’ is amazing.
  • Lostkeyz, a young hip hop artist whose track ‘Horror Stories’ made me think there are going to big things coming from his corner in 2017.
  • nyck – who made the most amazing duet of the year. ‘Decision’ still gives me the chills every time.
  • Confidence Man, whose track ‘Boyfriend’ made me laugh so much and also made an appearance in some IKEA ads. Well done guys!
  • jacob – what can I say but you’re so cool
  • Elli Schoen, who belted out some amazing tracks like ‘Mumma’ and ‘Hard Heart’
  • Azura – ‘Midnight’ is absolutely superb.
  • Georgia Mae – ‘Time With You’ made my top ten list for the Hottest 100. (I know it wasn’t the top ten here, but that’s because I’m being cheeky and sharing the love)
  • The Tapes – ‘You Know It’s Real’ is great ‘un
  • Nussy – I love groovin’ to ‘Just Just’
  • I’ve probably missed out on more of my faves this year but these mentions alone show how hard it was for me to pick a top 10.

Now for my number one pick this year. She’s the wonderful, the up and coming, the Unearthed High winner who’s already been recording new music in the US and wowing concert-goers at her live shows. Yes, it’s Gretta! #TeamGretta

#1 Drive – Gretta Ray

I was instantly taken aback by this song when I heard it being played on triple j. I still remember I was sweating away at the gym and thinking, ‘Shit, this track is amazing’. Gretta Ray has gone from heights to greater heights this year. Her Elsewhere EP was released in February, then she went on to win Unearthed High, and from there recorded another stunning track ‘Unwind’. It’s a new year and don’t think anything will be stopping her rise now. All the best for 2017, Gretta! Your music is nothing short of bliss.

Top Ten Picks of 2016 (#2)

I’ll take you for a drive.

#2 Glades – Drive

Kiss me on the corner with your hands in mine.

OoooooOooooOooooOooooOoooOoooh.

This track undoubtedly has made a huge impact on the Australian musicscape since it was released in January. The Sydney outfit must have known they were onto a good thing when they made this one.

Drive is an earworm that I could listen to all day. And I’m sure it is going to feature highly in the Hottest 100 come January 26. And they damn deserve it!

Tomorrow on New Year’s Day I’ll be announcing my #1 pick, so see you then!

Top Ten Tracks of 2016 (#3)

Time for the top three and my next pick is from a Melbourne artist who recently won an Unearthed comp to perform at the 2016 Beyond the Valley. There’s also been much love for her tracks ‘Daggers & Knives’ and ‘The Thaw’ this year. But I’m here to give my top three place to another track. That’s right, she’s Woodes and the track is…

#3 Rise – Woodes

This song never fails to captivate me. Elle Graham’s vocals take centre stage with an amazing choral support. And it’s so uplifting.

A lot as been said about the icy Melbourne artist, but clearly Woodes has a fiery side to her too. This year has seen her thaw, and out of the fire, Rise.

That’s why Woodes, and particularly her track ‘Rise’ has made my top three tracks of the year. All the best for 2017!

Top Ten Tracks of 2016 (#5)

Already past the halfway mark and the year is nearly over. I will be revealing my #1 on New Year’s Day to kick off the hopefully successful year of [Just In] Australia. But now for my fifth pick…

#5 Flower St. – Zen Haircuts

This track had my music senses tingling and I immediately went searching for more of their stuff. Zen Haircuts will be releasing their Zen Haircuts EP in early 2017, so keep your eyes peeled and your ears clean.

Top Ten Tracks of 2016 (#7)

Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird!

What a band name and what a year it has been for the abbreviated CTBNF. ‘Melbourne Bitter’ started it off and then the Melbourne band continued with the good stuff with ‘Make It’ and ‘Cool Parties’.

#7 Melbourne Bitter – Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird

This one still occupies a soft spot. Whenever it comes on the radio it only takes a second before you know you’re in for four minutes of blissful CTBNF. That’s why this makes #7 for me this year.

Top Ten Tracks of 2016 (#8)

Continuing to countdown the top 10 tracks of 2016, we’re moving on to Number Eight.

#8 Inside Voices – Mallrat

Mallrat’s ‘Inside Voices’ is firmly inside my top ten Unearthed tracks of 2016. The Brisbane artist has produced something undeniably relatable with this one. Who doesn’t get that sinking feeling that everyone’s politeness is just a mask for what they really think of you? Just me? Oh. Well I’ll just sit by myself in silence.
